To all my new friends, I’m so glad you’re here! Many of you have asked questions, especially about my journey with the Bible and how scripture transformed my life. I want to share my story, highlighting the profound impact scripture has had on my mental health. When I tell my Life Coaching clients that I promise using the Word of God can transform their lives, I know what I’m talking about!
My Journey with Scripture
Years ago I was overwhelmed by suffocating anxiety and enveloped in fear. It felt like a constant storm brewing inside of me, ready to break any moment. One night, Chris and I watched a Jamie Foxx movie, and something inside me snapped. I was suddenly consumed with a panic I could not breathe through; I thought I was either going to physically die or go insane and literally lose my mind. Just typing that is so hard, yet I am so grateful for where I am today.
I do not for one second believe that the attack was simply circumstances. My mind and body were under evil attack. The enemy is always lurking, waiting for an opportunity to strike (1 Peter 5:8).
These weren’t new fears, in the past, I’d experienced waves of depression and anxiety, often tied to fears about my health. These fears often spiraled into what-ifs and worst-case scenarios. I’m not sure if I realized it that night–I was fighting for my life, but for sure later it became clear this was not just about physical fear; it was a mental and spiritual battle.
The Role of Scripture
I had finally reached breaking point and knew I could not get through his latest rounds of attack on my own. Providentially, the Lord led me to a Biblical counselor. I had no idea! He was just the first guy on my insurance accepting new clients. During our first session, he asked me what my “tools” were. Not only did I not know what he was talking about or referring to, I was no mood to play psychological games.
He then began teaching me how to equip myself with “weapons” for this battle (Ephesians 6:10-18). One verse that became my lifeline was 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” He also taught me Philippians 2:5, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” I learned that claiming the truth in the Scriptures could transform my thinking.
A study published in the journal Mental Health, Religion & Culture examined the effects of spiritual practices on anxiety and depression. The researchers found that individuals who engaged in regular spiritual activities, such as prayer and reading religious texts, experienced significant reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms. This suggests that incorporating spiritual practices into daily life can provide emotional support and resilience during challenging times.
Creating New Habits
Because the mind is fickle and forgetful, I started writing out verses and placing them around my home, surrounding myself with my new set of “tools.”. I listened to praise music and read uplifting books like The 4:8 Principle and Battlefield of the Mind. These daily practices were crucial in my recovery; I had to build new thought patterns, new habits…a new way of living essentially.
Also during this time of reinvention, I sought spiritual direction from our pastor. He emphasized God’s unwavering love for me; a fairly new concept for me to grasp. He reminded me of Romans 8:38-39, which reassures us that nothing can separate us from God’s love. During this time I was also struggling with guilt and shame–some of which was never mine to carry. This truth became my solid foundation.
