All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.
†2 Timothy 3:16
Have you wanted to teach your child, using the Word of God, but not sure where to start?
Have you looked for a thoroughly Catholic study of the scriptures for your children and come up empty handed?
Have you wanted to teach your child lovely Catholic prayers alongside the beauty of the scriptures as a means of virtuous living?
Hi, my name is Jenny and I longed for those very same things a few years ago. I had learned to use the Word of God as a source of comfort, teaching and correction for myself; I wanted to teach my children to do so as well. But where to start? I scoured mommy blogs and Amazon looking for answers. While their advice was good and somewhat helpful, I kept thinking, “There is just something missing.” Then it dawned on me, I am a Catholic mother, raising Catholic children and I needed a Catholic resource.
The Biblical parenting resources I kept coming across lacked God’s wisdom and counsel found in the other seven books of the Bible often excluded from Protestant Bibles. That’s seven books filled with God’s wisdom and Fatherly advice for teaching, correcting and encouraging my children. These parenting books also made no mention of the Eucharist, Blessed Mother Mary, the sacraments or traditional Catholic prayers I could use to teach my children how to strive for and live a virtuous Catholic life.
The other problem? There was no way I could remember much less recall these beautiful scriptures I wanted to use to teach, correct and encourage my children. I needed a resource that was quick, easy and convenient to use. Not finding one, I followed the prompting of the Lord and started the work of putting together my own resource.
The Catholic Child’s Teaching Bible is a color coded, apologetically inclusive resource for Catholic families to teach, correct and encourage using the beautiful Word of God. This is no way an exhaustive resource, although there are close to 280 scriptural references including more than 40 found in the Catholic books of the Bible, plus traditional Catholic prayers found at the end of each topic to be used for memorization or handwriting practice.
This Bible resource is designed to make you Bible quick and easy to navigate through common behaviors we may face in our home. This can be used in the “heat of the moment” to find just the right verse or used for character and virtue training as a daily Bible study.
For the purpose of The Catholic Child’s Teaching Bible, I used the Ignatius Press, Revised Standard, Catholic Bible, 2nd Edition, Paperback. The Catholic Child’s Teaching Bible has been formatted to rest nicely inside this Bible.
To tab the Bible I used one package each of Post-it Flags, Assorted Primary Colors, 1/2-Inch Wide and Post-it Flags, Assorted Bright Colors, 1/2-Inch Wide.
To underline the verses in the Bible I used Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip Pens, 12 Pack.. I found these work better than highlighting because they do not bleed through or seem to dominate the page with color. This leaves room for any notes or other verses you wish to underline.
I printed The Catholic Child’s Teaching Bible, which is delivered wirelessly as a PDF, in “booklet” format, which equals four pages printed per sheet of paper. I then took the pages to my local office supply store. I had them cut and coil bind the pages with a clear cover and a piece of chipboard on the back for stability. That only cost me around $5.
