Description
In Titus 1:5 we learn that Paul and Titus worked together in Crete, spreading the gospel and establishing churches. When Paul had to leave, Titus stayed and worked among the congregations there. Since Titus was left behind to do a difficult work, Paul wanted to instruct and encourage him – and he did so with this letter.
The people of Crete were not easy to work with (Titus 1:12–13). Titus needed a healthy dose of extraordinary patience and supernatural love. It would have been easy for Titus to decide he was needed somewhere else, somewhere easier even, to spread the Gospel. Instead, he stuck it out and finished his work.
The above explanation could describe any of our lives today. It’s hard, all of it. It’s all hard but it’s also all good and holy work when we know, love, serve, and share Jesus. There will be obstacles and hardships and we will get tired, frustrated even.
First and foremost, Paul encouraged Titus to preach God’s Word. This call is as relevant today as it was then, maybe more so and we have no “hardship” excuse. What I mean by that is, that we don’t have to travel by land and by sea to spread the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus. We walk around with tiny computers attached to our hands that can transmit information around the world in mere minutes or less.
I’ve included a Character Study Worksheet in this Online Bible Study. I’ll get you started with some characteristics of Titus:
· Titus was a true son in our common faith (Titus 1:4).
· Titus was a genuine brother to the Apostle Paul (2 Corinthians 2:13).
· Titus was a partner and a fellow worker with Paul (2 Corinthians 8:23).
· Titus walked in the same spirit as Paul (2 Corinthians 12:18).
· Titus walked in the same steps as Paul, in the same manner of life (2 Corinthians 12:18).
· Titus could be a pattern to other believers (Titus 2:7).
Paul’s Mission for Titus
“For this reason, I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you.”
