I haven’t written for a while on daily affirmations but not because I haven’t been saying them. My favorite by far is still some variation of “It’s Ok.” I think it’s one of my favorites because it’s so easy and natural, it’s almost like an exhale in those times when things really don’t seem ok. Telling myself they will be ok by repeating a simple two word phrase, well, it really is as easy as letting out a long, slow breath. Here’s what I wrote in the original daily affirmations post a while back, “It’s ok if this season is hard. It’s ok if this season is messy. It’s ok if you feel far from God. Thankfully our faith is not feeling based. Thankfully when we glance at God through cranky toddlers, grouchy teens and crusted dishes…He’s still looking at us.” Oh goodness, if we could only know, even if we don’t understand, that very simple fact, “He’s still looking at us.” If we lived our lives with the presence of mind that God is looking at us, I believe we would begin to see all the little miracles that fill our day.
Daily Affirmations: My Day is Filled with Little Miracles
An author wrote one time, “Maybe all my days are filled with little miracles, but I’m too distracted by what I think is life to notice them.” Is that not the truth?!? I think so many of us feel our lives are so small and inconsequential, that we don’t see, much less expect miracles to be happening all around us…on a daily basis. We “Like” Facebook status updates about big answered prayers, we cry watching videos of miraculous stories, and we gobble up tales of the saints and the miracles they experienced or performed. But we fail to see…we fail to even look for…those little miracles that make up our blessed daily life.
So let’s say we all believe what I’m saying; we believe our lives are filled with little miracles everyday. So we start thinking back over our day…and maybe we have to go back a couple of days because our “spidey sense” is not fined tuned yet to notice all the little miracles. And BAM! We remember the other day when that guy ran the stop sign and we were “lucky” enough not to get hit. Yep, miracle city right there! And then we get excited because we also remember this Christmas we were exposed to the flu and we didn’t get it! Or the mechanic called one day last week and said the problem might be a $3000.00 fix and it turns out the next day it’s only a $329.41 fix! (recent true story by the way). Holy Smokes we are beginning to see all the little miracles!!! But wait! There’s more! Let’s dig a little deeper…
What about that day our husband came in the door grumpy with a capital “G” and we were all grumpy…and surprisingly we responded to each other with love? One of the synonyms of “miracle” is “surprise.” Don’t we all have those days where we surprise even ourselves with our good behavior?
Or, you’re feeling kind of frumpy (and rather hairy because your eyebrows need some serious attention but you don’t realize it until after you’ve stood there talking to the cool soccer moms for a couple of hours and afterward all you can do is hope they didn’t notice) and these same moms “reveal” to you they like the printables you offer on your blog. One of the synonyms of “miracle” is “revelation.” And isn’t it a revelation of God’s goodness when your daughter walks out onto the field of a soccer complex and ends up on the right team, with the right coach, the right girls and the right parents?
How about that daughter who loves soccer with everything she’s got (but not more than God) and also understands the demands of being a blessed part of a large, one income family in a two income world so she uses her skills and talent to make rosaries and even non-Catholics want to buy them because she and her work are “wonderful.” One of the synonyms of “miracle” is “wonder.” And is it any wonder when passion, skill and hard work come together to continue to build good character?
I mean we could very easily call these “luck” right? Or call them nothing at all. But if we believe the words of the Bible are true..which we do…then we read those words of love from Jesus posted right up there, “I will never leave you…” and the only conclusion we can come to is to know all these good things–because they aren’t lucky things…they aren’t coincidences…and they aren’t nothing–are miracles.
Miracle–A miracle is an event not explicable by natural or scientific laws. Grumpy people getting along lovingly cannot be explained by natural or scientific laws and there is no “right place at the right time.”
Explain to me how life has any bit of sweetness in it, because, have you watched the news lately? The only way to explain the joy, consolation and sweetness of this life is God. And God performs, grants, desires and delivers miracles in our day-to-day life…we just miss them because they look like, well, life. And life looks a lot like the fact that we live out our days on a spinning ball in the universe and learn long division…I’m just saying.
Do you think I’m grasping at straws with all these “little miracles?” Maybe. But I’d rather err on the side of seeing too many “little miracles” rather than not seeing enough. And then I can encourage myself with daily affirmations like, “My life is filled with little miracles!”
