One of the greatest gifts I have given myself this year has been to read my Bible daily. As I read, I pull out Word of God quotes, a little something to reflect in and bring my mind back into the presence of God throughout the day. These Inspiring Bible Quotes have quickly accumulated through this year!
My “rule” for my daily reading and searching for Word of God quotes is this, if it makes me pause, stop or think, I underline it and then go back and highlight it. The other rule is, if I think it, I write it down. If I have a question or comment about what I’ve read, I write it in the margin or on a sticky note on the page. I need to start keeping a journal page of all the inspiring Bible quotes I’ve highlighted so far this year.
Word of God Quotes
The first Word of God quotes I want to share is taken from January 1st in my One Year Catholic Bible,
One thing I really appreciate about the New Living Translation of my One Year Bible is the cut to the point clarity in the wording! In the above verse, there really is no wiggle room to wonder what the Psalmist is talking about. He very clearly states two things:
1. Don’t follow the advice of the wicked.
2. Don’t stand around with sinners.
Pretty self-explanatory don’t you think? And isn’t the reason sometimes why we don’t want to sit down and read our Bible? We just might read something that just might require us to make a change in our life. And when faced with a command that would require us to possibly make some changes in our lives and in our circle of friends, we might just decide to fall back on the excuse, “Well, I just don’t understand my Bible.”
There are varied reasons why we would prefer to “misunderstand” this first of our Word of God quotes. The first I’ve already mentioned, we don’t want to make changes. Either we’re too comfortable, we don’t want to be seen as “that crazy God girl”, or we don’t see anything wrong…or wrong enough, to warrant a change. We might fear the loneliness that would be the result of culling relationships based on this verse or even, we might miss the attention.
Yes, the attention. Have you ever seen a group of what most would consider “questionable” character and there always seems to be that one moral, or relatively moral friend in the mix? It’s confusing at first but if you start to think about it, we all want to be seen. We all desire a recognition for the goodness that is in us.
An average person in an average group of friends blends into the average. But an average person in a questionable group of friends stands out and is recognized for their goodness, no matter how slight. In comparison to the “sinners” that stand with, they shine!
This Word of God quotes, the advice of this Psalm, the first verse of the first Psalm, as a matter of fact, don’t even stand around sinners. I think this is a great verse and reflection to discuss with our children, especially our pre-teens, teens, and young adults.
