I spent some time last week working on another module from Simplified Organization. In this one, I identified my roles, described what I would be like if I faithfully lived these roles and then composed “vocations statements.” I truly appreciate and prefer the term “vocation statement” verse “mission statement.” Tomato/Tomahto? Nonetheless…from these vocations statements, I am putting together a prayer journal. I mentioned recently I need to pray more intentionally and a prayer journal will help me. As I was working on my prayer journal Sunday, I realized these vocation statements also make perfect daily affirmations.
Daily Affirmations: I Am a Child of God
I’ve written a couple of lists of daily affirmations before: Daily Affirmations for Self Esteem, Daily Affirmations for Wives and Daily Affirmations for the New Year to list a few. What this exercise in breaking down my roles and composing my vocations statements has done is focused on one aspect of who I am and then forced me to come up with more specific affirmations…make sense?
For example, my first role is as a child of God–a Christian. So in this instance, my daily affirmations will be hyper focused on this one aspect of myself. So I might compose affirmations like:
I am a joyful child of God.
I am a charitable child of God.
I am a prayerful child of God.
Joyful, charitable, and prayerful are the adjectives I chose to use if I were to faithfully live my role as child of God. So each day when I pray for myself using my prayer journal, I would make sure to include prayers and Bible quotes that ask God to help me intentionally live and fulfill my role as a Christian–joyfully, charitably and prayerfully. Make sense now?
I continued this process of determining my roles, using adjectives to define the ideal of my roles and then searching the scriptures and asking the Lord for the words to those prayers I would pray for each role.
After a child of God, I am a wife, then a mother, then a homemaker and homeschooler. I am a writer and friend as well. As I work through my prayer journal and daily affirmations, I compose words that will bless me in those roles. After I set aside time to pray for myself, I begin praying for others.
I desire blessings and protection on Chris as a husband and father. So my prayers switch from me to him. I use the scriptures and inspirations from God to compose my more “formal” daily prayers for him. Same for my children, our home and the other roles I enjoy.
Although I daily pray for my children, I am also going to set aside specific days for each child to pray more intentionally and intensely for their specific needs. In addition to having certain days for my children, I will also have specific days for my home, my friends, my writing (including you all who visit The Littlest Way). And each prayer will encompass particular daily affirmations, for example in my prayers for my role as a writer, I would want to pray that my words are for the glory of God and the encouragement of others.
I am just in the beginning stages of putting together my prayer journal so be sure to follow The Littlest Way by email to see the finished product when I share it.
Do you use a prayer journal?
I do carry a journal with me, but it’s not specifically for prayer. I write my thoughts or take notes. But I am going to focus more on praying. Thanks for this post. It’s a good tip and something I will start doing.
I love the idea of this kind of journaling… it’s so intentional and really encourages to reinforce scripture.
Thanks for sharing. I may give this a try as well.
xoxo
Aside from all of those things you are – you are one amazing person! I thank God for the gift you are!
That prayer journal is such a cool idea! Love it!! And yes you are indeed a child of God! 🙂
I am a huge believer in journaling… whether it be lifestyle, prayer, art, or a combination! Love this!
I really like this idea, I think it is especially important for us as women. How often do we struggle in the area of identity? Thank you for sharing this.
Very interesting! I can’t wait to read more about your prayer journal. 🙂
Great thoughts on prayer!
