And here we are in our Lent Devotional for Women, Holy Saturday. I can’t share a quote with you from my favorite book for Lent, Reflections on the Passion, because the book ended yesterday. Awkward?
Is Holy Saturday awkward for anyone else? To me, it feels like when someone wants to take my picture and I’m not sure what to do or how to hold my hands. Do I act like it’s normal, every day, or is there something specific I’m supposed to do? See, I told you, awkward.
And now, I can’t even open my favorite Lenten devotional for some guidance. Every single year I am disappointed when the book ends. It truly is not only my favorite Lenten read, but it is also one of my favorite books of all time! I wish he had a year-round book of reflections. (Charles Hugo Doyle does have two other books I own, Guidance in Spiritual Direction and Sins of Parents: Counsels on Marriage and Youth Guidance).
Anyway, as much as I hate it, it’s appropriate, isn’t it? My Church is silent and bare, now like never before! My Lenten companion is no longer. There truly is a silence and it seems a bit uncomfortable…ok, reeeeaaaaallly uncomfortable, especially this year.
And I’m not even really sure what to say now for the last day of Lent; “I hope it was a good one?” I will say this, there were a couple of realizations I had this Lent.
- Our Lord quoted scripture. This realization hits me every single year! That must mean a few things–it’s true, powerful, and meant to be used!
- God created everything blessed thing in this world with His Word. He could have saved us with His Word alone–it took much more. Our salvation required the death of Jesus Christ, the second person of the Blessed Trinity, to die a horrific death. Crucifixion is so terrible, it is virtually non-existent in a world that sometimes seems as cruel as they come.
- The enemies of our Lord blindfolded Him when they were mocking Him and beating Him up. Our enemy does the same even today.
I think back to my anticipation of this Lent being “THE ONE!” And then I think about my falls and I realize, once again, this Lent was not “THE ONE.” Honestly, the older I get, the more suspicious I become of myself when I get all excited over “THE ONE.” The older I get the more I realize, my faith, my salvation, these are not a one-time deal…or a 40-day deal, or even a, this year deal. My faith and the road to heaven are an all-day, everyday deal.
And thanks be to God for that because if He judged me on a one-time basis…{{{{shudder}}}} Since I’m not sure what to say, I’ve looked around and found some good articles and explanations about Holy Saturday.
Quickly before I go. Did you have a favorite in our Lent Devotional for Women this year? I’d love to know which particular Lenten devotional spoke right to you.
Enjoy your Easter! And I’ll see you next week.
