Let’s get personal in this Lent Devotional for Women. How’s your prayer life? Is that a touchy subject? Especially during Lent? By now you know I’m all about The Littlest Way for these daily devotions for Lent.
This Lent, well, all of my Lents now, I don’t set out to do much, but instead, do what I would normally do with love. Do not be fooled! It might sound like I’m taking it easy, and maybe for you that would be an easy Lent…for me, let’s just say it’s a good Lent.
An Easy Lent & Prayer
That brings us to prayer. St. Teresa of Avila, and I’m sure many other great saints, considered prayer simply a conversation with God. And as we’ve seen in the Scriptures, God is Love. So, prayer is conversation with (L)love.
If I went days or weeks without talking to my husband, our marriage would suffer. Now, there are seasons where conversation consists of coordinating who’s taking which child where. But we have to temper those seasons with ones of more focused conversation.
My relationship with my husband is the second most intimate relationship I have; my relationship with God being my most intimate relationship, Why would I think I can go days or weeks or even longer without focused conversation, focused prayer, with God?
Of course I talk to Him daily, “Lord I need…Lord I want…Please Lord…Oh Lord…Oh no Lord…” Here’s the thing, if I only talked to my husband when I needed a loaf of bread picked up from the store or a gallon of milk while he was out or when his socks were on the floor (which by the way, poor example on my part, he’s neater in that department than me)…well, you can imagine right?
A distance would slowly but surely form in our relationship.
Make Time for Important Conversations
We all have that time to spend in intentional and purposeful conversation. We all make that time, when we talk to our spouse, even in the busiest seasons of life, even when it’s merely coordinating children and soccer games. It might not be a set time but there will be a moment in our day that we can have a minute or two to catch up…even if just for a minute. This time might be right before he leaves for work, or right after dinner, or maybe not even until bedtime, but there is a pocket of time we can turn our glance and focus on each other and the relationship.
Unfortunately, with life as crazy as life is sometimes, it might not be every day, but eventually crazy busy will catch up to us and we know, we have to make a conversation date or else! If we keep putting off and putting off, well…let’s just say I do not want to read of your eventual divorce for “irreconcilable differences.”
[Tweet “We have to find a pocket of time somewhere in our day to talk to God. #lent #lentdevotional #lentdevotionalforwomen”]
It might not be first thing in the morning like all the seemingly “holy people.” It might not be at multiple set times throughout the day when others stop to pray the Office or personal intentions. It might not be at bedtime when all the seemingly “holy people” are praying, again. But there is a time. And we HAVE TO find that time, make that time, and take advantage of that time. HAVE TO.
In today’s passage from “Reflections on the Passion” the author points out the scripture verse in John 18:2 where it states Judas knew the place where our Lord was praying because He “had often met there with His disciples.” A glimpse into our Lord’s habit of prayer.
This reflection makes me wonder, does my husband, my children, my close friends…do they know I have a habit of personal prayer? We pray as a family before bed almost every night, but do they know I habitually pray at other times?
“Those people who are too busy to pray soon find their spiritual life on the wane. Not feeding their souls, they grow very lean. There can be no beautiful, strong, helpful Christian life without prayer.”

(This is by far my most favorite book to be read during Lent.)
Find your prayer pocket…NO! MAKE your pocket of prayer! If it stresses you out to actually think about writing it down as a real live appointment, then don’t. But be aware of that pocket of time and then use it for its intended purpose.
Yes, intended purpose. If all things come from God the Father, and we know they do, then that pocket of time is an invitation from your loving, merciful, and Creator of time, Father in Heaven. It’s an invitation to spend intimate time together.
I’d like to know, when is your prayer pocket?

My prayer pocket is when I am taking my morning walk. It is quiet and still….

This may sound silly, but I have an app for that! I use the Echo App to remind me to pray. It is really useful when my schedule is busy 🙂

I am enjoying your Lenten reflections so much! Short, to the point, do-able, and solidly Catholic. This series has been a big part of my Lenten journey so far. All of us are trying to become a better wife and mom, and grow in holiness too. Your help is a Godsend, literally. Thank you!
